To Survive Another Day

Glowing orange butterflies float in a lush meadow
Happily embracing the sun’s light
Not being aware that their weightless dance
Will be interrupted by the slithering darkness.

Thunder is heard from far away
A warning of the fray that comes for them
And yet the Flutter pay no heed
Preferring to feast on the blushing flowers.

Only when the lightning strikes
Triggering the fall of the Monarchs
The children fly for the protective trees
As the storm threatens to swallow them.

When the rain begins to fall in sheets
And the last butterfly finds their shelter
They turn their black eyes to their beloved green field
And begin to mourn their elders.

This tragic event in the lives of the butterflies
Has caused them to heed the signs
And when a storm begins to roar
The butterflies return to the forest
To survive another day.
